Children at the Library

A public library is often such a warm, welcoming, and friendly place that many parents tend to think it's safe to leave children alone in the Children's Room or elsewhere in the library while they use the computer or search for books. Parents often forget that the library is a public building. You wouldn't allow your 7 year old to roam the mall alone. You shouldn't leave children under 12 alone in the library, either. The library staff has little control over who enters the building or where they go in the building.

It only takes a second for
disaster to strike.

The library staff is not responsible for the care, supervision and safety of the individual child. Staff must be available to help patrons find materials, give computer assistance, help in other rooms, answer the phone, order books, plan programs, and check out books, among other responsibilities.

For Safety...

  • Children must be accompanied at all times by an adult, guardian, or sibling at least 16 years old.
  • Keep your children close and in sight.
  • Do not let children wander alone, even in the Children's Room.
  • Do not send children to the bathroom alone, even in the Children's Room.

Enjoy the library with your child
in a safe manner.
